Union Minister Pralhad Joshi has reaffirmed India’s commitment to renewable energy, stating that the country is making significant progress toward its ambitious target of producing 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030.

Speaking at the Panchjanya Infra Confluence 2025, Joshi emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s approach to goal-setting, noting that the PM never opts for easily achievable targets.

“The Hon’ble Prime Minister does not set easy goals for himself or for us. He believes in setting ambitious targets that push us to strive harder. In the renewable energy sector, too, he has laid out a bold vision—and we have already achieved 50 percent of that goal,” Joshi said.

He confirmed that India is “firmly on course” to achieving the green hydrogen production target by 2030.

Joshi, who also serves as the Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, had earlier addressed the Annual Green Hydrogen R&D Conference, reiterating the importance of the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM). Launched in 2023, the NGHM aims to position India as a global hub for green hydrogen and is seen as a key pillar in the country’s energy transition.

With an outlay of ₹19,744 crore, the Mission is built on four core pillars:

  • Policy and regulatory framework
  • Demand creation
  • R&D and innovation
  • Enabling infrastructure

As part of the mission, dedicated hydrogen hubs are being developed at Kandla, Paradip, and Tuticorin ports to boost India’s export potential. Major corporations like NTPC, Reliance, and Indian Oil Corporation, along with numerous start-ups and MSMEs, are investing heavily to build a strong hydrogen value chain, expected to generate lakhs of new jobs.

The NGHM’s targets include:

  • 5 million metric tonnes of annual green hydrogen production by 2030
  • 125 GW of additional renewable energy capacity
  • ₹8 lakh crore in investments
  • 6 lakh new jobs
  • 50 million tonnes of annual CO₂ emissions reduction

India recently achieved a key milestone in its energy transition by reaching 50% of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources—five years ahead of the timeline set under its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Agreement.

As the nation moves toward its broader target of 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070, Joshi highlighted India’s bold, inclusive, and technology-driven approach to sustainable development.

In a broader context of welfare delivery, Joshi—who is also the Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution—noted that the government is currently providing 44 lakh tonnes of foodgrains every month to 81 crore eligible beneficiaries across the country.

Massive solar plant boosts clean power

Gorbea Solar Push Strengthens India’s Renewable Path: The Gorbea Solar Project, inaugurated in July 2025 by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, marks a major leap in India’s green energy drive. Located in Bikaner, Rajasthan, this 435 MW plant was completed in just eight months.

Built across 1,250 acres, the project operates under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement with the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). The plant can power 1.28 lakh households and will cut 7.05 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions each year.

Rajasthan leads India’s solar growth

Rajasthan now generates around 70% of its electricity from renewable sources. Its total renewable energy capacity stands at 35.4 GW, with 29.5 GW from solar and 5.2 GW from wind.

Static GK fact: Rajasthan ranks first among Indian states in installed solar capacity.

To boost its leadership, the state introduced the Integrated Clean Energy Policy and Green Hydrogen Policy in 2024, aiming to attract investment and scale sustainable energy projects.

Economic and environmental benefits

The Gorbea project is not just about power—it also creates local jobs and improves farmer incomes. It generates 755 GWh of clean electricity annually, reducing dependency on coal and other fossil fuels.

This aligns with India’s national goal to achieve 50% non-fossil fuel power capacity before 2030 under its international climate commitments.

Technology innovation sets a new standard

The plant uses Topcon Bifacial Mono PERC panels, which absorb sunlight from both sides for higher efficiency. Over 1,300 robotic units clean the panels regularly to ensure optimal performance.

Minister Pralhad Joshi highlighted future technologies like perovskite tandem solar cells, known for their high efficiency. Rajasthan’s high solar irradiance makes it ideal for such experimental projects.

Static GK Tip: Perovskite solar cells are a next-gen solar tech gaining global attention for their cost-effective performance.

Central schemes and big investments

Under the PM-KUSUM scheme, Rajasthan has deployed over 1.45 lakh solar pumps for farmers. In urban zones, 49,000+ rooftop solar systems were installed under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar initiative, with over ₹325 crore in subsidies disbursed.

Despite this, many rooftop applications are still pending, indicating the need for faster implementation and better public outreach.

Rajasthan has attracted proposals worth ₹6.57 lakh crore, with a large share focused on renewable energy and green hydrogen, reinforcing its role as India’s renewable capital.

Jaipur: Union minister for new and renewable energy, Pralhad Joshi, Saturday inaugurated the 435-MW Gorbea Solar Power Project, developed by Zelestra India, in Rajasthan. He said, “With every megawatt we generate, we are not just producing power, we are building a New India.”

The Gorbea Solar Power Project, delivered in under eight months, spans 1,250 acres and is backed by a 25-year power purchase agreement with Solar Energy Corporation of India. Joshi noted that almost 70% of Rajasthan’s power capacity is now sourced from renewable energy, with over 35.4 gigawatts installed, 29.5 gigawatts from solar and 5.2 gigawatts from wind. He praised the state’s proactive role in India’s renewable energy growth.

The minister highlighted that the project has turned farmers into partners in India’s energy journey, as the land used was leased from them, offering stable income. “Our farmers are no longer just food providers. They are now energy providers as well,” he said.

Joshi lauded CM Bhajan Lal Sharma for accelerating policy and investment reforms. Rajasthan has adopted the Integrated Clean Energy Policy 2024 and operationalised the Rajasthan Green Hydrogen Policy.

Investment commitments worth over Rs 6.57 lakh crore were signed last year with a major focus on renewable energy and green hydrogen.

Under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, over 49,000 rooftop installations were completed in Rajasthan, with over Rs 325 crore in subsidies disbursed. Joshi urged faster implementation, given the 2.7 lakh applications already received.
