India’s renewable energy sector experienced USD 11.8 billion in financial investment in the first half of 2025, which is the second-highest half-year inflow in history, according to the latest reports. The momentum is indicative of India’s increasing prominence in the global clean energy arena, spurred by an uptick of solar projects and consistent investor confidence.

Clean energy auctions and regulatory landscape

Clean power auctions were a critical growth lever. India is already one of the world’s most active renewable markets, having approved 59 gigawatts (AC) of capacity in 2024, which is more than twice as much as the year before. Auctions provide revenue certainty and allow private developers to scale with long-term visibility.

However, there are uncertainties about future capacity additions. The government plans to implement the Approved List of Cells and Manufacturers (ALMM) from June 2026. This could also create issues for open-access projects. JMK Research cautioned, “Following the implementation of ALCM, the expected shortage of domestic content requirement (DCR) modules is likely to hamper the execution of nearly 20-25 GW of green open access projects over the next 2-3 years. Concurrently, the high prices of DCR modules will also increase the project power tariff by up to USD 0.0046 to 0.0057 per unit.”

This shift aims to deepen India’s solar value chain by including solar cells alongside modules. However, domestic supply gaps remain stark: the July 2025 ALCM list had only six manufacturers with 13 GW of cell capacity, compared to 91.5 GW of modules listed in June.

Solar sector leads the way

Solar represented the lion-share of the investment landscape, comprising 77 per cent of investments in H1 2025. There was a mix of utility-scale and small-scale solar projects that benefitted from record auction awards as well as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). FDI in the renewables sector stood at USD 12.67 billion in March 2025 – an increase from just 1 per cent in FY21 to nearly 8 per cent in FY25.

Wind investment had halved from the previous year, however, hybrid projects that combined wind with solar and storage were emerging as a flexible solution to meet the overall round-the-clock demand.

Aluminium’s role in India’s energy transition

Some media reports have indicated that aluminium is developing into an important enabler of renewable growth. Aluminium is light in weight and can be recycled, giving it a clear role in solar modules and mounting structures, among other applications, with the overall flexible solution industry set to contribute 20 GW of additional capacity by 2030.

Sources also cited the commissioning delays as the impetus for the 25 per cent reduction in solar additions in Q1 2025 but noted large-scale projects from Adani Green Energy, Jindal, and Alpex Solar would yield a recovery for the remainder of the year.

By the first half of 2025, it was reported that India surpassed the capacious threshold of resolving over 50 percent of installed capacity from renewables, ahead of Paris Agreement targets. With mega-projects surrounding Khavda, Gujarat, billion-dollar investments coming from Jindal and Alpex, and aluminium-backed disruption, India is well on track to meet and possibly surpass its 2030 clean energy goals.

Gumla: Solar power has illuminated many dark habitations in remote, challenging terrains and hamlets in the hinterland now. Important public places also have high-mast solar lights. This became possible after a massive transformation was undertaken in the solar energy sector of the district by the administration in the last two years.

These solar-powered villages are inhabited by PVTGs, and the tough, undulating topography made the traditional electricity connection next to impossible. Given the situation, the district administration took up a special initiative for solar power, and it has become a boon for these tribal communities.

Talking to TOI on Tuesday, Gumla district planning officer Raman Kumar said, “Over 1,848 solar street lights have been installed in PVTG and other villages, while 153 high-mast solar lights have been installed at important public places across the district.”

Three main rural locations — Manjirapath in Bishunpur block, Jalhan-Sarango in Ghaghra block, and Naktijharia-Kobja in Raidihi block — now have mini solar power grids of 20 KWP, 10 KWP and 25 KWP, respectively, Kumar said.

Moreover, nine villages of the district have been selected as solar model villages for the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojna of the Centre’s new and renewable energy ministry. Among these villages are Bargaon, Nagar, and Sisai in Sisai block, Bharno in Bharno block, Fasia and Pugu in the sadar block, Chainpur in Chainpur block, and Navagarh in Raidih block.

“These nine villages have 12,981 households and a total population of 62,267 people,” Kumar said, adding that a time frame has been set to implement the scheme and a committee chaired by the DC would oversee the execution of the Centre’s ambitious scheme.

The initiative for solar power started during the tenure of former Gumla DC Karn Satyarthi, and the projects were executed by the Jharkhand Renewable Energy Development Authority.

Reacting to the initiative, Jyoti Behar Devi of Majhgaon village said, “The hilly regions have now electricity from solar lights for the first time.”

Kamla Kacchap of PVTG-inhabited Narma panchayat in Bishunpur block also told TOI, “Our panchayat now has solar street light at the thoroughfares. We feel safe while moving around at night, and sometimes villagers hold meetings under the solar light.”Our panchayat has nine revenue villages and 22 hamlets, all located in Netarhat Plateau’s tough terrain.”

Chandigarh: In a major push towards clean and sustainable energy, Haryana has set an ambitious target of installing 2.2 lakh rooftop solar (RTS) systems across the state under the PM Surya Ghar : Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY) by the financial year 2026–27.

The state also aims to solarise all govt buildings by Dec 31, without availing any central financial assistance (CFA). To achieve this, 4,523 govt buildings have been surveyed, identifying a cumulative solar potential of 122 MW.

The roadmap was unveiled during the State-Level Coordination Committee (SLCC) meeting chaired by chief secretary Anurag Rastogi, where senior officers presented the scheme’s progress and outlined strategies for faster rollout. “Haryana is not only promoting solar energy, we are ensuring it reaches the doorstep of every household, especially in rural areas,” said Rastogi.

To make the switch to solar financially viable, the govt is offering dual subsidies: CFA by the ministry of new and renewable energy, which is directly transferred to consumer bank accounts within 15 days of installation approval, and state financial assistance (SFA) for 1 lakh Antyodaya families, provided on a first-come-first-serve basis.
